Questions :

Provide your rationales to support your opinions in choosing a teaching model for teaching English skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).

Answer :

Cooperative Learning (CL) is a model where students do learning activities in small groups that share the workload relatively and ideally together to achieve a goal, and they usually receive awards or recognition based on their performance. This learning model is also known as a collaborative or interactive learning model, this teaching model refers to authentic and original language learning which of course takes place between two or more people. The aim is to create meaningful learning experiences that will help students to develop their thinking.

This cooperative learning model combines elements of task structure, reward structure, and authority structure. Task structures are the mix of activities that make up the school day. The reward structure can be based on behavior, tangible results, or rewarded performance in the form of better grades, teacher approval, or tangible rewards. Meanwhile, the authority structure refers to the control exercised by students over their activities, not by teachers or other adults.

Although in cooperative learning there is an element of competition, students are required to primarily work together cooperatively and not competitively.

And in my opinion, the learning model with cooperative learning will be very suitable to be applied in the classroom for reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. This is because :

1. Reading Skills with Cooperative Learning

With reading skills when studying in groups, it will allow students to work together, each of them can mark words that they think are foreign and also important, to then be able to exchange information or find out together the meaning of these words, so that their understanding will increase even more, and their vocabulary will also be richer.

2. Writing Skills with Cooperative Learning

By applying the Cooperative Learning learning model when they want to be skilled in writing, of course this will hone their understanding of how to use tenses correctly. With group learning, each of them can only master 2 or 3 tenses, and when a member of one of these groups has difficulty adjusting the tenses, he can ask other members of the group who master the tenses to help each other and explain. And when the cooperation of asking each other like this continues and is often said, it is very likely that they can memorize it by themselves. Due to repeated occurrences, it is possible for an individual to get used to it. And in fact, someone can do something because they are used to it.

3. Listening Skills with Cooperative Learning

In listening skills, the Cooperative Learning learning model is also very suitable to be applied, for example if the teacher is reading a narrative or an English reading, then for some students there must be some words spoken by the teacher who are still very foreign when they hear them, so they are not so understand what the teacher said. Therefore, with the learning method in groups, they can ask each other questions in the discussion session when the teacher has finished reading. And then, they will discuss each other, and can also ask each other what the meaning or command has been conveyed by the teacher.

4. Speaking Skills with Cooperative Learning

And for speaking skills, by applying the Cooperative Learning method, students will be able to discuss with each other and together formulate words in accordance with English rules in advance, so that they will try to do the best they can, because later they will present it to their friends in front of class to another group too. And this is also one of the healthy competitions, because actually the Cooperative Learning method is to have a reward structure. So that at the end of the lesson, the teacher can give an award to one of the groups that is considered superior to the others. And of course this can stimulate the enthusiasm for learning in each group, which of course will also have an impact on the success of learning and understanding for a student.

THANK YOU.
