Subject : Model dan Pendekatan Pembelajaran

Q:Provide your rationales to support your opinions in choosing a teaching model for teaching English skills (reading, writting, listening, and speaking)

A:So as far as i concern, we have 5 different teaching models which are useful on their own ways. Starting from cooperative, direct instruction, problem based, contextual, and finally classroom discussions.

So in my honest opinion, i dont think that one teaching model would be fit with every aspects of learning english such as Listening,Reading,Writing and Speaking. That some of my friends are using one single method for all aspects to me its just pure ignorance and irresponsibility. As a future professional teacher we should comprehend this basic "one plus one" equation and be wise with our choice.

We have a pack of Output skills such as Speaking and Writing, then we have a pack of Input skills like Reading and Listening. Thus, we need to acquire balance in order to make our teaching become as effective as possible.

By using wise method selection and diligence, we can make a summary of our own depending on the students' skills or the situation of the class. Some students maybe uncompatible with method A but there are some students who are excellent at method C, so Specific type of teaching models should be applied on each different Aspects of learning English.

1. Speaking(Classroom Discussion)

This is a very obvious choice because it is a process of free viewpoint presentation within one's classroom, facilitated by tutors, it could promote a better interactive communication among students, and to inspire the students with new ideas and facilitate the students' learning from each other; during the discussion students are required to critically evaluate viewpoints from very diverse perspectives, which is a good Teaching and Learning progress. So like, I basically need my students to speak. And I would 100% avoid chosing direct instruction model where I have to spend more than half the time explaining materials because I want my students to  be the one who mostly speak in class, while I'd be expected to be the feedback source.

2. Writing(Cooperative Learning)

"Writing is the language of the working class", as a quote i pick up from the famous Swedish "Rikskansler" and writer named Axel Oxenstjärna. I choose Cooperative Learning because it has a strong relation with specialised academic journal and its strong sense to practical work. Cooperative learning is a structured method of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. So students are expecting to cooperate with each other while writing and discuss their own experiences into the tip of their pens. I'd avoid using Classroom Discussion because in a context like this we need a stronger relation to academic works and an organised discussion method into writing. Thus, making Classroom Discussian heavily inaffective in my opinion.

3. Listening(Contextual Learning)

This is probably the most unexpected combination but in my opinion it would work well anyways. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a learning concept that helps teachers link the material they learn to students' real-world situations and encourages students to make connections between their knowledge and its application in everyday life. But why Listening? Because when students are pludged into their headphones and given random situations so that they listen to.. it would make them bored and we should try to approach them using the casual style. Listening to a compilation of their own everyday common activities would make them easier to comprehend and listen carefully to the speakers. Students are expected to give each other feedbacks in this manner, because connection with their real-life problem would be interesting. I'd avoid using direct instruction because it would bore them off quickly.

4. Reading(Problem based learning)

And finally i choose Problem based learning on Reading because Problem based learning is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are able to learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material. The benefits of using this method include more focus on learning objectives, flexibility in the use of the subject, and the ability to induce a deeper level of learning by inducing more critical thinking skills.  First, problem based learning is a series of learning activities, meaning that in the implementation of PBL there are a number of activities that students must do, students not only listen, take notes, then memorize the subject matter, but through the problem based learning (PBL) model students become active in thinking, communicating, searching and processing data, and finally making conclusions. Second, learning activities are directed to solve problems. This problem based learning places the problem as the keyword of the learning process. This means that without problems learning will not be possible. Third, problem solving using a scientific approach to thinking. With such Problem-Solution connection within Reading, i'm sure that student would be more encouraged to read and think critically. I'd avoid the usage of Direct Instructions here because Reading is a work of critical thinking and brainstorming activity rather than an open discussion with limited feedback from student perspective.

I think thats all i can say in this End-Semestre Exam and im sorry if i had any mistakes and see you next time ma'am herlina.

Sincerely, Kenan Lee.
