Online Shopping Scams
In the current era of globalization, everyone is spoiled and sometimes complacent with the all-round "internet" service. How is it possible, activities that require energy, time, and patience, now can be done with just a touch.
Like clothes. Now that online shops have sprung up, shopaholics can find and buy their dream clothes just by looking for them on the store's website, placing orders or ordering, making payments via ATMs or even internet banking, then it's done. Orders will come to the doorsteps of the house, without moving a meter from outside the fence.
But please note that it is not known that convenience, the internet can be a threat? What if the online shop was just a fake shop, offering pictures of nice clothes but didn't really exist? Some of the complacent people will get caught in the cheater's net and become easy targets for prey.
One of the frauds that occurs is through an online payment medium called "paypal". Last October, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) authorized the use of non-Latin letters as official letters for registered names on the network, such as for the domain name of a website.
This is a real pleasure in the world of the internet, especially internet users in countries where they do not use Latin letters as their everyday letters. However, Times Online criticized that the legalization of using non-Latin letters as letters for registered names could create fraud.
This is because letters with different readings or a collection of letters forming a word with a different meaning with another set of letters will be displayed the same in different scripts. An example is paypal.
It turns out that this fraud has been carried out in real life, not through a fake paypal.com website, but through a fake email on behalf of themselves as an official party. In the fraudulent email, the party under the guise of paypal said that there was "irregular activity" from the account of the owner of the electronic mail, therefore, the fraudster asked for his identity to check the truth.
It even includes an attach file containing any irregular activities that occur from the account. But when you give up your identity, get caught in the con artist's trap.
After knowing the dangers in the middle of the convenience of the internet based on this essay example, it does not mean that I intend to suggest to stop using internet services in making transactions or the like.
We may or are even advised to use it, considering that services using the internet can make it easier and benefit us, especially when we can't do something we have to do is also pressed for time.
The steps below can be done as an effort to identify whether an email is actually from an official party or not:
General greetings. Many fraudulent emails use generic greetings such as: "Dear PayPal member." etc. If the greeting does not include the first and last name, be careful and do not open links in the e-mail.
Fake return address. Most fraudulent e-mails have an artificial sender address in the “From” section. This section is easy to change.
Gives a sense of being threatened. Many scam e-mails attempt to deceive you by threatening that you will be in trouble if you don't respond as quickly as possible. They may also claim that an illegal transaction occurred using your account, or say that the official is updating it and needs new information as soon as possible. Beware, this is a key feature of fraudulent e-mails.
Fake links. Always check the address of the link to be opened. In this example essay is taught how. Move the mouse over the link and then view the URL in the browser or the status bar in an electronic mail. Scam links are usually dangerous. If you open a link like that, things that can happen are:
- Redirecting to a fake website to try to collect your personal data.
Will install spyware on your computer. Spyware is an application that allows hackers to monitor your activities, even stealing passwords or credit card numbers entered into cyberspace.
- Causes you to download viruses that can damage your computer.
Email looks like websites. Some e-mails will look like a website, causing us to enter personal information. Keep in mind the policy that some authorized parties never ask for personal information via email.
Fake URL. Only enter the password on the official page, for example: https://www.paypal.com/
- If you see an @ symbol in the middle of the URL, there is a high chance that this is a hoax. Companies usually use a domain name (example: https://www.company.com).
- Even though the URL contains the word from the official party, it does not necessarily indicate an official address. (examples: www.paypalsecure.com.www.paypa1.com, www.secure-paypal.com, and www.paypalnet.com.)
- Always enter the official page via the new browser page and type: https://www.paypal.com/
- Never enter the official page via email.
Spelling and sentence structure errors. Fake e-mails generally contain errors in spelling, sentence structure, and missing words. illogical. Mistakes also help fraudsters to avoid spam filters.
Sites are not secure. When entering your personal information on a website, the term "https" must precede the address of each website.
